We actively engage in teaching, research & medical education

contributing to undergraduate and post-graduate programs

Members of our Division, and Fellows, partake in teaching activities including undergraduate, post-graduate, off-service rotations and electives. We are also engaged in research, with focuses on clinical science research and medical education.

The Civic Campus is designated as the adult Regional Trauma Center, including upper extremity and craniomaxillofacial trauma. Our Rapid Access Plastic Surgery Clinic has 3 procedure rooms and has on-site hand therapists, allowing for prompt patient-focused care. In cooperation with the Division of Neurosurgery, Oral Surgery and Ophthalmology, we provide comprehensive management for craniomaxillofacial issues. In conjunction with the Division of Rehabilitation Medicine, we have established a Peripheral Nerve and Trauma Clinic to address nerve injuries of the upper and lower extremities and more recently the spinal cord. Our plastic surgeons also support the Cardiac program. There is a microsurgical simulation and training program at the University of Ottawa Skills and Simulation Centre.

The General Campus focuses on oncologic reconstruction. In partnership with the Department of Otolaryngology (ENT), our Division provides all head and neck reconstructions for the region at The Ottawa Hospital. We collaborate extensively with the Division of General Surgery and have established several breast reconstruction programs to offer a variety of reconstructions in both an immediate and delayed fashion. We also support the oncologic programs with reconstructions for chest wall (Thoracic Surgery), sarcomas (Orthopaedic Surgery) and pelvic tumours (General Surgery, Gynaecology and Urology).

The Riverside Campus offers out-patient care, both in the OR and in the out-patient clinics. It is the site of our groundbreaking “High-Risk/Prophylactic Breast Reconstruction Program” that runs in conjunction with the Division of General Surgery. Our hand rehabilitation programs for both physiotherapy and occupation therapy are managed out of this Campus.

CHEO, which provides services to the Champlain LIHN and Western Quebec, provides care for cleft lip and palate (with ENT and Oral Surgery), craniofacial deformities (with Neurosurgery) and congenital hand deformities and brachial plexus injuries (with Orthopaedics).
